Daman Secures Patent For "Business Rules Management System" ComponentPatent Covers Process Crucial To Flexibility Of Large-Scale Database Systems AUSTIN, TXJanuary 23, 2002 Daman Consulting, a pioneer in the burgeoning industry of Business Intelligence, today announced the receipt of United States patent #6,317,749. The patent was granted for "A Method And Apparatus For Providing Relationship Objects And Various Features To Relationship And Other Objects." In a nutshell, the patent covers a process that is crucial to the integration and long-term maintenance of enterprise-caliber software systems, particularly data warehouses and other systems that store, aggregate or analyze large amounts of data. Specifically, the patent deals with the process of integrating disparate software systems through usage of a business rules management system. Business rules are logical arguments used to automate certain computer processes. "Most enterprise architectures today consist of heterogeneous operational systems, the components of which were built in a variety of programming languages over a span of many years," notes inventor Bhalchandra "Bhala" Ghatate, Co-Founder and Vice President of Technology for Daman Consulting. "This results in an array of programming challenges, especially when changes are made to one or more components within an architecture." One of the greatest benefits of the invention deals with Impact Analysis, the process by which the impact of a particular change is gauged across the entire system. Using traditional means, such impact can only be discovered through laborious, time-consuming trial and error. With Ghatate's invention, however, this process can be automated. This automation yields tremendous benefit because programmers can quickly determine the far-reaching effects of any change in business rules. In the modern economy, this is crucial because the business climate and technology are both in a state of constant, turbulent flux. The patented process is a major component of Daman's Business Rules Management System, a technology already in use by a number of major financial services companies and manufacturers around the country, including three Fortune 500 corporations. Although it's difficult to predict the financial value of such an invention, there is already a palpable interest in the technology. "We're in serious negotiations with a major chip manufacturer and a major software provider to use the BRMS as an engine for a powerful piece of customized software," he says. "We're targeting the financial services industry." Daman Consulting provides advanced business intelligence solutions to a wide range of industries. The company was founded in 1995, and has offices in Austin, TX; Houston, TX; Denver, CO; and San Jose, CA. For more info, visit Daman's Web site at: http://www.damanconsulting.com.
